These mezzotints from the 19th
century were rendered virtually extinct by the turn of the 20th century. The "Art Deco" frenzy, "Abstract" & "Minimalist
Art" movements; ergo the 20th century's obsessive need for simplicity, nearly nailed the coffin on the slightest interest
the "modern" artist may have had for this rare engraving style. Strangely enough, since the beginning of the 21st century,
the Internet has evidenced a resurgence of interest in the mezzotint engraving technique. (For further discussion, click here for "Knowing the Difference, p.1 & p.3, "Art Terms" and "Purpose/Philosophy" )
