John Sartain's skill
at capturing the spirit of a painter's original intent is es-pecially
evident in this work. Famous throughout most of the 19th century for his dis-tinct use of the mezzotint medium, Sartain,
the patriarch of a large and influential artists' family, never cut corners in the majority of his "gift book" mezzotint frontispiece
inserts and, if the viewer was lucky, more inserts accompanying the text.
The same could be said for his multiple con-tributions to the cultural/artistic periodicals of his day, including
his own periodical "Sartain's Magazine", later to become "Graham's Maga-zine", where his mezzotint contributions con-tinued
(like the one on this page) and "Godey's Ladies' Magazine" of Philadelphia, his family's home town.
